Why wallpaper removal in Florida homes is harder than it looks
1980s and 90s vinyl in condos and villas
Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and Delray Beach condos and villas from that era are full of vinyl wallpaper in kitchens, baths, and powder rooms. The vinyl face usually peels off, leaving a paper backing and paste that must be soaked and scraped. Rushing this step tears the drywall paper and creates hours of skim coating.
Wallpaper installed on unprimed drywall
Builders often hung paper directly on bare drywall. The paste bonds to the drywall face and removal takes the face with it. We use enzyme removers, steam where appropriate, and patience. Damaged areas are skim coated smooth.
Humidity and adhesive residue
Any paste left on the wall will react with new paint and cause bubbling or a crackled finish, and South Florida humidity makes it worse. We wash the wall completely, let it dry, and prime with a sealer designed to lock down residual adhesive before paint.
Painted-over wallpaper
Sometimes a previous owner painted over the paper. Removal is possible but slower. In some cases, skim coating over the painted paper is the better option. We will tell you which after looking.
Our wallpaper removal process
- Test a corner. Determine the paper type and how it was hung.
- Protect the room. Floors and fixtures covered; power off at outlets.
- Strip the face. Vinyl and top layers peeled.
- Soak and scrape. Backing and paste softened with remover or steam and scraped carefully.
- Wash. Adhesive residue removed completely.
- Repair and skim. Gouges and torn drywall face skim coated and sanded.
- Seal and paint. Wallpaper-specific primer, then two coats of paint.
